| Main Achievements

2010

In 2010, both research groups developed projects that were initiated in previous years, organized conferences and published books with projects' results.
CIAC has been working in two main axes: the first main axis is related to internationalization efforts to collaborate with different geo-cultural networks. The second axis is a scope quest for the dialogue between theory and practice in the field of arts. These open and wide scopes have been most important to define some of the main questions raised in research projects, as well as in PhD and M.A. programmes.
CIAC organized the 1st Workshop in Arts Research in collaboration with the EUA/Council for Doctoral Education. The event had the purpose of disseminating research in the field of arts and was developed around the following panels: Arts, Science and Technology, Researchers/Creators, Doctoral Schools in Arts (Research and Advanced Learning): from the academic world to the labour market.
CIAC signed a protocol with the publishing house Gradiva, under the coordination of Mirian Tavares. This partnership will produce the Arts and Media Collection, with the main purpose of revitalizing studies in the fields of artistic manifestations, with particular focus on fields that are related to the media. The first published book in this collection, "Nas margens. Ensaios sobre teatro, cinema e meios digitais", organized by Gabriela Borges, reflected a dialogue between CIAC's main research fields: drama, cinema and digital media with articles by CIAC's members and international scholars.
CIAC also promoted the interchange of research with other research centres at the University of Algarve, participating in the seminar "Environment, Economy and Society Colloquium" promoted by CIMA, CIEO and CIAC.

| Theatre and Performance Studies

2010

During 2010, the Theatre and Performance Studies Group developed several research projects: the project História das Escolas de Teatro [History of Drama Schools] published A Escola de Teatro do Conservatório (1839-1901) [The Conservatory Drama School] and Contributo para uma História do Conservatório de Lisboa (1839/1971) [Contribute for the History of the Lisbon Conservatory], by Eugénia Vasques; the project Actor Permanente [Permanent Actor] promoted the 3rd theoretical/practical meeting supervised by Thomas Richards, collaborator and disseminator of Grotowsky, which also discussed the state of the art on the current educational perspective in this field. The project seeks to pre-publish an essay on the themes of the three workshops, to be published in Portugal and the United States in 2011. The project Cena & Texto [Stage & Text] was developed to understand texts as key elements for dramaturgy and staging, characterised by the translation and review of texts by three influential Portuguese dramatists in the 20th Century: António Patrício (1878-1930); Natália Correia (1923-1993); and Miguel Rovisco (1959-1987). Finally, the project Linguagens de Encenação e Interpretação [Staging and Interpreting Languages] carried out a survey on the artistic practice of directors, choreographers, performers and stage artists with a view to reflect upon performance studies in the Portuguese contemporary context, namely through the study of several artistic directors, by students of M.A. programme in Drama of the ESTC. All data related to these projects are available on the CIAC crossmedia platform (www.crossmediaplatform.ciac.pt).

2009

During 2009, the Drama and Performance Studies Group developed the following projects: the Permanent Actor, which promoted the 2nd workshop on the theme «A procura do actor: formação do actor no teatro contemporâneo: três práticas» [The actor's quest: actor training in contemporary drama: three practices], supervised by Polina Klimovitskaya (Yale University), Deborah Margolin, (Yale University) and Renato Ferracini (University of Campinas), as well as the collection and treatment of audiovisual data by students of the Degree in Drama of the ESTC and the University of Évora. The project Cena & Texto [Stage & Text] was based on a research on two of the most important playwrights of the 20th Century: António Patrício and Natália Correia. This research will produce several written publications in a partnership between CIAC, Assírio & Alvim and Imprensa Nacional - Casa da Moeda. The research also discusses the issue of myth/myths in theatre, relating it directly with the mythocritical. Hence, it is centred on mythical materials emerging from dramaturgy and theatre, in an attempt to understand the way in which they can represent new forms of culture to be added to our collective consciousness. This research will produce three critical essays on this particular theme, and one of the main lines of research will be directed to produce critical thinking in the community about the drama context.

| Film Studies, Visual Arts and Communication
